Watched a guy strip his oil pan bolt with an impact gun, now I hand torque everything

I was at a buddy's garage in Tacoma watching him do an oil change on his Civic. He zipped the drain plug back on with his impact gun because he was in a hurry. Next thing we know, the threads are gone and oil is weeping out. Cost him 90 bucks for a new pan and gasket. I used to do the same thing until that moment. Has anyone else had a drain plug disaster or do you all actually respect the torque spec?
