Last Friday my check engine light popped on in my 2013 Corolla, so I ran down to the Advance Auto on Route 9 in Poughkeepsie, and the guy behind the counter pulled the code, looked at me real serious, and said it was the mass air flow sensor, the O2 sensor, AND a vacuum leak, so I walked out with $140 in parts. Spent most of Saturday on YouTube learning how to swap the MAF and cleaning the throttle body with a $9 can of cleaner, and the light came right back on Sunday morning. My neighbor Dave, who used to turn wrenches at a dealership for 20 years, came over, borrowed my $15 code reader, and the actual code was P0455, which is just a loose gas cap. He twisted it till it clicked three times, cleared the code, and it's been off for a week now. What got me was when he said the parts guy probably gets a spiff on every sensor he sells, and I never even asked to see the live data or the freeze frame, I just handed over my card because he sounded like he knew. So now I want to know, do you all read the freeze frame data before you buy anything, and does anyone have a code reader app they actually trust for that?
