Tried an old trick to quiet a squeaky belt, got a bigger problem

Swapped my serpentine belt last Tuesday in the driveway using a soap and water mix I remembered from my dad, and it worked fine until Thursday when the belt started smoking on the highway. Learned the hard way that soap attracts moisture and dirt, so now I'm ordering a proper tensioner tool, has anyone else had this backfire after 20 years of hearing that advice?

That soap trick gets passed around way too much. Read a thread last month where a guy used it and ended up with the belt chunking off on the interstate, so you're not alone in this mess.
