Torqued my lug nuts by feel for 5 years, found out when a wheel nearly came off
I always just cranked them with a breaker bar until they felt tight. Did brakes on my 2004 Civic last Saturday and used a torque wrench for the first time because my cousin loaned me his. Spec was 80 ft-lbs. My old method was doing about 120 ft-lbs. Rotor was slightly warped from me overtorquing this whole time. On the freeway later I heard a clicking sound, pulled over, and two studs had stretched. Glad I caught it before a wheel left the car at 70 mph. Anyone else skip the torque wrench for years and only realize after something scary happened?
