Torque wrench clicks but youre still ruining bolt threads

I spent 6 years torquing my lug nuts while the wheels were hanging off the ground and only figured it out when a buddy in Austin watched me do a brake job and laughed, now I always lower the car to the ground before the final click, has anyone else found out this way?

Funny how hard it is to unlearn bad habits, I did the same thing for years before a neighbor pointed it out. I always thought the click was the torque, not realizing the suspension was eating half the force. Soon as I set the car on the ground and gave it that extra turn, everything felt way more solid, never looked back.
