TIL the guy at the parts counter in Fresno was right about bleeding brakes, I just didn't want to hear it
So for about six years I bled my brakes the lazy way, just pumping the pedal and cracking the bleeder while my wife held it down, and I figured that was good enough since the pedal always felt fine. Then a few weeks back I was buying pads at the counter in Fresno and the old guy behind it asked how I bleed them, and when I said pedal pumping he kind of winced and told me to stop pumping because I was just pushing air back and forth and risking my master cylinder seals on a 2004 truck with 180k miles on it. I blew him off at first, honestly, because the pedal had felt okay to me for years. But then I read up on it that night and realized he was right that pedal bleeding can chew up an old master cylinder, and mine is original. So I spent $62 on a little vacuum bleeder and did the whole system myself in the driveway, and the fluid that came out of the rear lines was almost black. Pedal is firmer than it has been in years and I did it in under an hour without bugging my wife to sit in the cab. Has anyone else switched to a vacuum bleeder, and did it make you mad you waited so long too?
