Talking to a fleet mechanic about oil changes made me rethink everything

Guy who maintains 40 work vans in Columbus told me he just follows the manual's severe service interval and never pays for synthetic blends. He said most DIYers change oil way too early and waste cash on overpriced filters, so now I'm questioning my old 3,000 mile habit. Anyone else switch to the severe schedule and see any difference in engine wear?

I used to be the guy at 3,000 miles no matter what, paying extra for the fancy synthetic stuff. Then a buddy who runs a delivery fleet showed me his maintenance logs and the oil analysis reports, and honestly the proof was right there. Now I just follow the severe schedule in the manual and it's been fine for 60,000 miles, so I'm with the mechanic on this one.
