Showerthought: a $4 bottle of power steering fluid beat the $120 flush the dealer pushed
My truck's steering started whining on cold mornings around 3 months ago, and the dealer quoted me $120 for a full flush. I said no thanks. Instead I sucked out the old fluid from the reservoir with a turkey baster, topped it off with a $4 bottle of fluid from the parts store, and drove it a week. Did that 3 times over a month and the whine is gone, plus the fluid looks clean on the stick now. I know a flush pulls more out than a baster does, but for a 14 year old truck this felt like the right call. Has anyone else done the baster swap on an older vehicle and had it hold up?
