Question about why I was stripping oil filters wrong for 8 years

I was changing oil on my 2012 Civic last Saturday and the old filter would not budge with my hand. So I grabbed a screwdriver to hammer through it and twist it off like I always did. Then my neighbor Mike walked over and asked why I was making a mess when a simple $8 strap wrench from Autozone would do it cleaner. Now I gotta clean oil off my driveway and I'm wondering what else I've been making harder than it needs to be. Anyone else have a tool that made you feel dumb for not using it sooner?

You know a buddy of mine used a hammer and chisel on his oil filter for years? He finally bought one of those cup-style filter wrenches that go on a ratchet. Changed his whole oil change game, no mess, no swearing.

Why not just buy a new car every 8 years and skip the mess entirely?
