My coolant hose blew on the highway near Fresno and I used a cut piece of garden hose and two hose clamps to get home.

I was 40 miles from the nearest auto parts store, so I pulled over, cut a section from the garden hose I keep in my trunk for emergencies, and clamped it over the split with two worm gear clamps from my kit, which held just long enough to drive to a shop without overheating.

My buddy once fixed a busted heater hose with duct tape and a zip tie.

Man, that's some quick thinking right there! What kind of garden hose did you have in the trunk, the cheap vinyl kind or a tougher reinforced one? I'm amazed it handled the pressure and heat long enough to get you to safety. Did you have to stop and tighten the clamps again on the way, or did your fix hold solid for the whole drive?
