My $300 brake job vs the $900 quote, the savings went into my gas tank

Took my 2012 Civic into a chain shop in Austin last month for a squeal. They quoted me $900 for new pads, rotors, and a brake fluid flush. Said my rears were 'dangerously worn' which scared me for a second. I watched like 4 videos that night, bought a jack, stands, and the parts kit online for $180. Spent a Saturday morning doing all four corners plus the flush. Took about 5 hours including two trips to autozone for a caliper tool I forgot. The only scary part was getting the caliper bracket bolts off, needed a breaker bar and some elbow grease. Saved $600 and honestly the pedal feels way firmer than whatever they would have done. Has anyone else had a shop quote that was just flat out robbery? Where do you draw the line between DIY and just letting a pro handle it?
