Lost $80 on a fuel pump because I skipped the relay check

Swapped my fuel pump last month in Phoenix only to find the old one was fine, the relay was just clicking dead. $80 for the part plus a full Saturday gone. Anyone else ever replace a part that didn't need it because you didn't test the cheap stuff first?
