Just realized I was checking my oil wrong for years
I always checked my oil right after driving home from work, and it always looked low so I kept adding more. Last week my engine started making a weird noise and a mechanic told me you're supposed to check it cold on level ground. Turns out I was overfilling it by almost a quart, anyone else make this mistake?

Learned the same thing the hard way (and my wallet still hurts).

Wallet lessons hit different when you see how many times we pay for the same mistake. Started noticing that after my third broken phone screen - the pattern was me being in too big of a hurry and not paying attention. Its like that old saying about buying cheap boots vs expensive ones, except for me it applied to everything from car repairs to kitchen gadgets. Wish somebody had told me earlier that rushing almost always costs more in the end.
