I was torquing my oil drain plug with a breaker bar for years before a mechanic friend winced.
He saw me do it and said, 'You're going to strip the pan threads, it only needs 25 foot-pounds.' I always thought tighter was safer, but now I'm not so sure. Do you guys use a torque wrench for basic stuff like that, or is hand tight with a normal ratchet good enough?
