Got stranded at a rest stop in Ohio because I trusted the dealer's oil life meter

My 2016 Honda said 15% oil life left, so I figured I could push it another week before the drive to Columbus. Nope, at a rest stop near Toledo the check engine light started flashing and the engine started ticking loud. Tow truck cost me $140 and the shop said the oil was basically sludge, the previous owner must have never changed it on time. Now I just change oil every 5,000 miles no matter what the computer says, anyone else had a car lie to them about maintenance intervals?

That Honda sensor reads the oil quality, not just miles, so it was already too late when you bought it.
