Auto shop kid told me brake fluid is fine forever, glad I checked

Last month I was at a quick lube place in Fort Worth and the tech said my fluid was good because the color looked fine. I got home and grabbed my $12 tester from Amazon, it read 3 percent water. That stuff had never been changed since I bought the car, about 8 years now. Swapped it out myself over a weekend, took maybe 90 minutes. Has anyone else had a shop blow off fluid checks with the old eyeball trick?
