Am I the only one who quit paying for oil changes after watching a $90 bill turn into $20?
I used to drive to the Jiffy Lube near my place in Boise every 5,000 miles and hand over $90 without blinking, mostly because I thought draining oil was some kind of dark art. Then about 8 months ago my brother in law laughed at me and said the whole thing takes 15 minutes in a driveway with a $12 wrench and a $5 drain pan. First time I tried it I stripped nothing but I did spill oil all over my own shoe like an idiot. Now I buy a 5 quart jug for about $22 and a filter for $7 at Walmart, and I'm done in less time than it takes to sit in that waiting room with the tiny TV. Here's the thing nobody tells you: the hardest part is not the drain plug, it's figuring out where to dump the used oil without getting yelled at. I take mine to the AutoZone on Fairview and they take it no questions asked. So am I crazy for thinking everyone paying a shop for this is basically setting money on fire, or is there some reason I'm missing to keep handing it over?
