Went to the habitat for humanity restore in portland and saw everyone grabbing spray foam

I stopped by the one off 82nd last Saturday to look for some old door hinges. Noticed about 5 people walking out with cans of Great Stuff like it was going out of style. Nobody was picking up the actual lumber or windows just sitting there. Made me wonder if we've all gotten too quick to reach for a foam can instead of learning to cut and fit things right. Anyone else notice this shift at their local ReStore?

Haha yeah I definitely see that. I'm the type of person who buys spray foam and then realizes I forgot to put the nozzle on, so I just end up with a sticky mess and a bigger hole than I started with.

Huh, I actually see it a little different. I've been doing construction for about 15 years now and spray foam has its place just like anything else. Not everyone has the time or the skill to hand cut rigid foam board or pack fiberglass in perfectly, and a can of Great Stuff can save a homeowner from a huge draft or a bug problem in five minutes. There's a reason the store sells those cans, people grab them because they work fast for small gaps around pipes and windows. I get the sentiment about wanting to learn proper techniques, but sometimes you just need to seal a hole before winter hits and you don't have a week to practice. Plus a lot of folks going into ReStore are first time homeowners trying to fix up a cheap place, not pros with a full workshop.
