Walked through an old barn in Ohio and saw how they framed it in 1932
Tbh I went with my uncle to look at some reclaimed lumber from a barn he's tearing down near Millersburg. The place was still standing but barely. What got me was how they cut the joists by hand and the notches were all slightly off but everything still held for 90 years. No metal brackets, no engineered lumber, just oak and mortise joints. My uncle pointed at one beam and said 'that's the kind of work that outlasts the owner.' It made me think about how I frame things now with all the pre-cut stuff and hangers. Do you guys ever go back and look at old framing jobs just to see what you can learn from the way they did it without power tools? Has anyone else noticed those old joints just fit tighter no matter what the wood did over time?

Grandpa's 1948 Michigan barn had white oak pegs that swelled tight and never budged, unlike my modern hangers.
