Took me 8 months to realize my drill bits were backwards on this one job
I was boring through 2x6s on a deck rebuild in Tulsa and every hole came out splintered and off-center. My old foreman walked over, flipped the bit in my chuck, and said "you've been spinning her backwards the whole time you dope." He was right, the cutting edges were facing the wrong way, so my learning came from a site visit last Saturday. Anyone else had a basic tool setup that took them way too long to catch?

That Tulsa foreman sounds like he's seen it all. Wait, so you went 8 months without noticing the holes were splintered and off center? I'm curious how many boards you ruined before he walked over, because that's a lot of wasted lumber. Did the drill even feel different to you, like was it not biting into the wood the same way? I feel like after the first few holes I'd be wondering why my bit was just spinning and smoking.
