That whole 'dry fit everything first' advice drove me crazy for years
Was building a deck in Spokane last summer and got tired of tearing things apart to fix gaps, so I started gluing and screwing as I went. Has anyone else found that dry fitting just wastes time if you measure twice?

My neighbor's fence gate was my wake-up call. Spent a whole Saturday leveling and squaring everything with clamps first before I touched a nail. Took maybe an extra 15 minutes but the thing swung perfect first try. Last month I threw up a quick lattice panel without measuring and had to rip the whole thing down. Now I just do the fit-up no matter how small the job. Saves my back in the long run.

Yeah the 'measure twice' thing has a way of making you feel smart until you're staring at a 1/8 inch gap you somehow created anyway." Last spring I tried to save time on a fence gate by skipping the dry fit. Ended up having to chisel out a hinge mortise because the gate was binding on the latch side. Spent longer fixing it than I would have just setting everything in place first.
