That time I watched a pro carpenter frame a wall in 20 minutes
I always thought I was fast with a nail gun until I saw this guy at a Habitat build site last Saturday work without measuring every single stud. He just looked at the layout, cut three at once, and nailed them perfect. Now I try to trust my eye more instead of triple checking everything. Any of you guys ditch the tape for speed?

Oh man, that "work without measuring every single stud" line hit me right in the gut (and my ego). I tried that trusting my eye approach once on a simple garden shed and ended up with two stud bays so narrow I couldn't even fit a standard outlet box in them. Actually had to rip the whole wall apart and start over, which was real humbling for someone who brags about being fast. Now I just accept that I'm a tape measure guy forever, and that's fine.

And the thing is, that guy probably has 20 years of mistakes under his belt to build that kind of eye. I tried the same thing on a fence once and ended up with a gap big enough for a raccoon to stroll through, so I feel your pain. Have you ever tried marking your speed square with tape as a cheat code for common stud spacings?
