Spent 3 weekends fighting a crooked interior door frame, turns out the shims were the problem all along

Bought a fixer upper in Akron last spring and every interior door hung like it was drunk. I checked the hinges, re-set the strike plates, even planed one edge down twice. Still wouldn't close right. After 3 full weekends of swearing at it, I took the whole casing off and found the previous owner had shoved random scraps of cardboard as shims. Once I pulled those out and used proper tapered shims with construction adhesive, the door closed perfectly on the first try. Has anyone else found weird DIY shortcuts in an older house that made a simple job take way longer than it should?
