Screw pocket holes for shop cabinets, I'm going back to dados after 3 builds
Everyone on here keeps pushing pocket hole jigs for shop cabinets like it's the only way. I built three cabinets last spring with my Kreg jig and 1 and a quarter inch screws, and two of them started racking within 6 months under just the weight of my planer and bits. Last month I tore one apart and cut real 3/4 inch dados on my table saw with a stacked dado set I got for $60 off Marketplace, and the difference is night and day. The dado cabinet hasn't shifted a millimeter even after I loaded it with 80 pounds of clamps. Pocket screws are fast, sure, but for anything holding real weight in a garage that sees temp swings from 20 to 95 degrees, they just don't cut it. Am I the only one who thinks we over-recommend pocket holes to new builders for structural stuff? Would love to hear if anyone's had long term luck with them in a non climate controlled shop.
