Question about a shed roof that went from flat to a water slide

My buddy built a 10x12 shed in his backyard last spring with what he called a 'flat' roof. By November, it had a serious dip in the middle, holding about 3 inches of water after every rain. The cause? He used untreated 2x4s for the rafters and spaced them 24 inches apart with no center support. The wood sagged under the weight of the shingles alone. We fixed it by adding a treated 4x4 post right in the center. Has anyone else had a roof frame just give up like that from using the wrong lumber?

Sounds like a pool cover he didn't plan for. My DIY skills are about that level too. Would probably try to use balsa wood or something.
