One inspector's comment about my saw blade direction flipped everything

A county inspector in Spokane watched me install a circular saw blade backwards and just said "you're cutting with the fence, not the teeth" without any real explanation. Turns out I'd been burning through blades for 5 years because I never checked the arrow on the housing. Has anyone else had a simple side comment that made you redo a basic habit?
