Just wasted $85 on a 'universal' sink drain kit that didn't fit my old basin

I was replacing the drain on my kitchen sink, a basic job I've done before. Saw this kit at the hardware store labeled 'universal fit' and grabbed it without checking the box details. Got home, took the old one apart, and the new flange was a good half inch too small in diameter. The gasket was the wrong shape too. Had to put the old, leaky drain back in, drive back to the store, and order the right part. Lost the $85 on the kit because I opened it, plus an hour of my time. Always measure your old part, even if the package says it fits everything. Anyone have a go-to brand for oddball vintage fixture parts?

Not really, @river_fox18, universal fits are often just bad.
