Am I the only one who didn't know a basic 2x4 isn't really 2 inches by 4 inches?
I was sketching out a workbench plan last week and pulled up a lumber yard spec sheet for the first time, and it says a standard 2x4 is actually 1.5 by 3.5 inches. I sat there staring at it because I've been eyeballing cuts off the label my whole life. Then I grabbed my tape measure and checked the stack in my garage, and sure enough, every single one measured short. I know it's from planing and drying but it still feels like a little trick. How do you all account for that when you're laying out a cut list, do you just subtract the half inch every time or work off the real size from the start?
