Warning: Stop guessing your chain wear, a grumpy old mechanic set me straight
I used to just ride a chain until it started skipping, figured that was the bike telling me it was time. A guy named Ray who runs a tiny shop over on Vernon Street watched me pull a stretched chain off my commuter and said flat out, "You're throwing away cassettes for no reason." He grabbed a $12 chain checker off his bench and showed me mine was worn past 0.75 percent, which meant my cogs were already chewed up and I never even felt it. That was 8 months ago and I've been checking mine every couple rides since, the tool takes about 10 seconds. Turns out I was swapping out a whole cassette and ring set around $90 when a $20 chain at the right time would have saved it. My rule now is check it before the skipping shows up, not after. What's the wear point you all replace at, and do you bother checking the cassette teeth too or just the chain?
