Vent: My local bike co-op in Boulder taught me to never trust a 'free' used part without checking it first.
I grabbed a seemingly fine chainring from their bin, only to have it snap clean in half on my first real climb up Flagstaff Road. Anyone know a good way to spot hairline cracks in used aluminum before installing it?

That's a rough way to learn. Did the co-op have any sort of disclaimer posted by the free parts bin?

Honestly seems like common sense to check parts before using them.
