Vent: My chain snapped going down a steep hill in Golden Gate Park

Last Saturday I was cruising down that big hill near the conservatory of flowers and my chain just gave out with zero warning. I ended up skidding into a bush and now my knee is scraped up and my rear derailleur is bent to hell. Anyone else had a chain fail on a descent and how do you check for wear before it snaps?

Whoa, wait - zero warning? That's terrifying. I've had chains wear out slowly and start skipping before they go, but yours just snapped clean going downhill? That must have sounded like a gunshot going off. Was it an older chain or did you just have bad luck with that one?
