Update: My rear derailleur snapped clean off 4 miles from home and I zip tied it to my frame to coast back
Happened on the Katy Trail last Saturday and I had nothing but a multi tool and two zip ties in my bag. Made it home in one gear but now I'm second guessing whether I should've just called for a ride, how do you all decide when a trailside fix is worth it?
Wait, you snapped the derailleur clean off and still had the chain flopping around back there? That thing could've whipped into your spokes or wrapped around your cassette and locked the whole wheel up on you. Coasting four miles on the Katy with that hanging by two zip ties is wild, that trail is flat but it's still four miles. In my experience it's the little bits you don't think about that get you, like the chain snagging your frame or a stick catching the dangling parts. Your mileage may vary but I would've been white knuckling the whole way back.
