Three days to change a flat I could have done in 20 minutes

I hit a nasty pothole last Tuesday on my way home from the market in Austin, and the rear tire went flat instantly. I spent three days wrestling with a stuck bead that refused to budge, even after I tried soapy water, a plastic tire lever, and finally a screwdriver out of pure frustration. Has anyone else had a tire that just would not come off, or did I mess something up with how I was seating the new tube?
