That time I swapped my chain too late and it ate my cassette

Last month I finally learned my lesson about stretching chains. I had been ignoring the wear on my commuter bike for weeks, telling myself it was fine. Then one night on the way home from work in Austin, the chain started slipping bad on a hill. I got home, checked it with the ruler trick, and it was way past 1/16th. By then the cassette teeth were hooked and sharp, so putting a fresh chain on just made it skip worse. I ended up replacing both the chain and the cassette, which set me back $85 instead of the $20 a new chain would've cost. Now I check my chain every month with a cheap gauge, and I'm wondering how often you folks replace yours before it gets to that point? Anyone else had a drivetrain die because you put off the simple fix?
