Shoutout to the guy at the bike co-op who told me to check my chain for stretch

He pulled out a chain checker tool and showed me mine had stretched past 1% after just 800 miles. Has anyone else skipped that check and wrecked a cassette early?

My buddy Mike was Mr. "I'll check it next time" and ended up having to replace both his chain AND cassette at like 1200 miles. The shifting got all sloppy and he just figured it was the derailleur needing adjustment, but nope, the chain had eaten those teeth right down. He showed me the old cassette afterward and I couldn't believe how sharp and pointy the sprockets looked compared to a fresh one. Definitely a lesson learned the expensive way, you know?

I don't know, sounds like Mike just got a bad batch or something. I've let chains go way past 1200 miles and never had a cassette get wrecked like that.
