Saw a mechanic at a co-op in Portland fix a sticky shifter with just a ziptie

Was at the Bike Farm co-op last Saturday and this old dude had a Shimano shifter that wouldn't click right. He popped the cover off, sprayed some degreaser in there, and used a ziptie to pull out a bunch of gunk that was stuck between the pawls. Took him like 5 minutes and it shifted perfectly again. Has anyone else found random household stuff that works better than actual bike tools?

Those specific tools exist for a reason though.

My buddy fixed a rusty chain with WD-40 and an old toothbrush once.
