Overheard a guy at the co-op say grease guns are a scam, nearly lost it
Was in the Bike Kitchen on SE 12th last Tuesday and this dude tells a newbie that a $20 grease gun is pointless because you can just smear grease on with your finger. That is HORRIBLE advice for hubs and bottom brackets. A proper gun gets grease INTO the bearings, not just on the surface, and I rebuilt a wheel hub last month that failed after 200 miles because someone hand-packed it sloppily. Has anyone else had to fix a bike that died from lazy grease application, or am I the only one who treats a $20 tool like a must-have?

Huh, I get where you're coming from but I've seen plenty of well-lubed bearings die from overpacking and bad sealing too. A gun helps, but it's not magic if you don't know what you're doing with the cartridge and pressure.
