My rear derailleur hanger bent on a trail ride last Saturday and I had to walk the bike three miles back to the car. What's the best way to check alignment at home?

Saw a video where a guy just used a ruler against the cassette to check. Honestly though, I'd just buy the alignment tool, it's worth it.

But doesn't that ruler trick depend on the wheel being perfectly true first?
