My chain checker tool just hit 0.75% wear and I was shocked

I've been using the same chain for what felt like forever, just cleaning and lubing it. Checked it yesterday with my little Park Tool CC-2 and it went straight to the 0.75% mark. That means I've been riding on a worn chain long enough to potentially damage my cassette and chainrings, which is a way more expensive fix. I always thought the 'replace at 0.5%' rule was for pros, not my weekend rides. Has anyone else let a chain go this far and had to replace more than just the chain?

Doubt it's that big a deal unless you're grinding up mountains every day.

Yeah but even my daily commute felt way better after a quick tune-up.
