Just realized my chain lube was causing all that crunching noise
My neighbor Dave watched me spraying WD-40 on my bike chain and told me that's not real lube, just a degreaser. I ignored him for 3 months until the crunching got so bad I could hear it from inside my house. Has anyone else made this mistake or am I the only one who thought that stuff worked fine?

The crunching sound is your bike's way of telling you something, same as how my dryer started screaming before the belt finally gave out last year. Dave was right about WD-40, but it took me awhile to learn that lesson too. This is one of those things where people assume one product does everything, like using dish soap on a car or a butter knife to screw in a nail. We all have that moment where we find out the hard way that specialized tools and lubes actually matter. At least your chain is probably spotless now underneath all that noise.

Poured bacon grease down my sink once, never again.
