Honestly, a guy at the trailhead in Boulder showed me how to check chain stretch with a ruler

Ngl, I was about to buy a new chain but mine was still under 0.5% wear. Anyone know a good brand for a basic 12-inch metal ruler that won't bend?

That chain checker trick is a lifesaver, saved me a bunch of money too. Honestly though, a ruler is kind of a pain for that. The little dedicated chain wear tools are way faster and not that expensive. For a ruler, just grab whatever cheap steel one from a hardware store, they're all basically the same. The key is just making sure it's not some flimsy plastic one.

Old chains stretch more in the cold.
