Got roasted by an old mechanic for using too much grease on my bottom bracket
I was rebuilding my Fuji touring bike last month and packed the bottom bracket bearings like I was buttering a bagel. Older guy named Phil at the co-op told me I was just gonna attract dirt and wear things out faster. Now I only put a thin layer on the bearings and let the grease do its job. Anyone else get called out for overdoing it on the lube?

I mean, buttering a bagel? That's such a perfect description I can almost see the grease dripping off your fingers. Idk, I guess it's easy to think more is better when you're trying to be thorough.

Man, I remember last year I was ALL about piling on the butter thinking I was being thorough, like slathering it thick was the only way to make sure every bite was covered. But @mason.mary you're RIGHT, that greasy drip is the exact sign you went too far. I switched to a thin scrape across the cut side, and now I actually taste the bagel itself instead of just a butter slide. Three seconds of patience with a cold knife and the bagel's warmth does all the work, no dripping required. It's weird how much better a little less can be.
