Am I the only one who thinks soaking chains in gas is a bad idea?

My neighbor saw me degreasing my chain last Saturday and told me to just drop it in a coffee can of gas overnight, said that is what he has done for 20 years. I tried it on an old beater chain and the gas ate the factory grease inside the rollers, so it squeaked worse than before after two rides. The gas also swelled the o-rings on my buddy's 10 speed chain, so now I am back to a jar of mineral spirits and a cheap brush. Has anyone found a soak that gets grit out without wrecking the lube that comes sealed in there?
