Vent: I thought paid hostel work exchanges were a scam, then Lisbon proved me wrong
Six months ago I was dead set against those work exchange sites where you trade 20 hours a week for a free bed. Sounded like a way to get used as free labor by some hostel owner. Then my rent in Lisbon jumped to 900 euros and I gave one a shot anyway, mostly out of desperation. Turned out the guy running the place was straight up with me about hours and even fed us dinner most nights, so I saved around 700 euros in a month. Now I want to know if I just got lucky or if most of these gigs are actually fine, because I have heard some real horror stories too.
