Rant: I booked a $9 hostel in Medellin for a week and ended up getting way more done than in my $1,400 Airbnb
Last month I was in Medellin and I had already burned through my budget on a fancy Airbnb in El Poblado, so for the last 7 days I swapped to a $9 a night hostel bed in Laureles just to save cash. I figured I would get zero work done with people coming and going, but weirdly the opposite happened. The dorm had this loud fan and 5 other people all typing on laptops by 7am, and something about that made me actually sit down and work instead of scrolling. I knocked out a full client project in 4 days, which normally takes me closer to 9. The private room I paid $200 a night for had great wifi and a desk, but I kept taking naps and watching YouTube. I think the shared pressure of other people grinding did more for me than any fancy setup ever has. Now I am wondering if I should just stop paying for nice places and stick to hostels with a work crowd. Has anyone else had a cheap place make them more productive than an expensive one?
That line about "the shared pressure of other people grinding" is the part I keep coming back to. Do you think it was really the hostel itself, or was it just that you were surrounded by six other people who were up and working by 7am while you were still in bed? I've noticed the same thing when I travel, but when I dig into why, it almost always comes down to one or two specific people in the room who set the tone. Curious what the crowd was like there, were they actual working folks or just backpackers pretending to work between parties? And did the energy hold up later in the week or did it wear off once the novelty passed?
