Just left Medellin, check your hostel wifi BEFORE you book
I spent 2 weeks in El Poblado last month and thought the wifi at my hostel would be fine for video calls. Big mistake. Upload speed was under 1 Mbps during peak hours, so my client calls kept freezing and dropping. I lost almost 3 days of billable work trying to find a coworking space with decent connection. Places like Selina and WeWork fill up fast, and the backup spots charge $15 a day just for a desk. If you're heading there, ask the hostel for a speed test result from 6 PM local time, not just the morning. Has anyone else gotten burned by 'great wifi' that turned out to be a lie on the road?

Honestly, the "6 PM local time" tip is good but I think the bigger issue is testing on a weekday, not just any evening. Most hostels have way more people checking in and streaming on Thursdays and Fridays than on a Sunday night, so that one test might still not show you the real worst case. Tbh, I've started asking for a speed test during their busiest night and also checking what the backup router situation is like, cause one dead zone can nuke your whole week.
