Just had the best and worst travel week back to back in Lisbon, which mode is the real nomad life?
Last week I found a $9/day co-working spot in Lisbon with fast wifi and a cheap cafe downstairs, and I got more done in 3 days than in the 3 weeks before that. But the week prior I was in a hostel with 5am construction noise and a card that kept declining, so I got almost nothing done and felt like a fraud. Is a good setup luck or something you should always plan for, and how much do you budget for it?
Bad setup is not bad luck, it is a choice you make when you book fast and cheap. Wifi speed and noise level are things you can check before you pay, and skipping that check costs you a week. My rule is to budget $15 to $20 a day for a place to work with good internet, because a wasted week costs way more than that in lost work. The $9 spot was not luck, you just got smart about what to look for.
