Appreciation post: blew $1,400 on a 'nomad proof' apartment setup in Chiang Mai before I figured out my real problem
So I spent my first 8 months as a nomad hauling around a folding keyboard, a mini tripod, a portable second screen, and one of those folding laptop stands, all because I swore I needed a 'real desk' to get work done. Total damage was about $1,400 across all of it, and half of it sat in my bag the whole time. Then one Tuesday in Chiang Mai my wifi died mid call and I walked to a random coworking spot on Nimman Road. I got more done in 3 hours there than in my whole apartment setup the week before. The thing that tipped me off was looking at my own screen time, 4 hours of that day was me rearranging gear and 'optimizing' instead of actually working. So now I'm stuck between two schools of thought. One side says your setup is your office and it's worth the money. The other side says the whole point is that you can work anywhere, so gear is just weight you're dragging around. I genuinely don't know which one I land on. Anyone else have a moment where you realized the gear was never the problem?
