That one critique about my color choices finally made sense

I used to pick colors for my digital pieces by feel, usually bright and saturated, and I thought that made them pop. Then last month at a local gallery show in Austin, a painter I respect looked at my landscape piece and said, "Your shadows are all the same temperature, so the light has no story." I didn't get it at first, but I took the file home and started isolating each shadow layer. Turns out every shadow I had was just a darker version of the base color, no warm or cool variation. I spent three nights reworking one image, adding cool blue shadows near the horizon and warm purple ones under the trees. The difference was huge, the piece suddenly felt deep and real instead of flat. Now I block in shadows first with a temperature plan before I even touch the highlights. Has anyone else had a single comment that made them rethink their whole color process? What did you do to fix it?
