Overpainting every single layer was holding me back for 4 years

Back in 2021 I'd spend hours painting every tiny detail on individual layers, thinking it made my stuff look more polished. Last month I started blocking in big shapes and merging layers early, like a guy from a Chicago workshop showed me. My pieces now have way more flow and I finish in half the time. Anyone else ditch the super layered method for something looser?

32 layers for a single coffee cup was my personal record. I thought each little highlight needed its own home. Turns out I was just making a filing cabinet instead of a painting.

Did you ever accidentally merge the wrong layers and lose something you actually needed?
